Showstopper Says Goodbye: Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODI Cricket After 13 Electrifying Years

When Glenn Maxwell walks away from the One Day International (ODI) format, he doesn’t just leave with stats — he leaves with stories.

From impossible run chases to jaw-dropping 360-degree batting, the Australian all-rounder has been one of cricket’s most entertaining and polarizing figures.

With a World Cup title in 2015 and another in 2023, Maxwell has now officially announced his retirement from ODIs.

The news, while expected by some due to his injuries and shifting focus to T20s, still sent a wave of nostalgia across the cricketing world.

The Announcement

Maxwell made the announcement ahead of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2025 campaign, confirming that he would no longer be available for ODI selection. He said:

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. This format gave me some of the most special moments in my career, including the World Cups, but now it’s time for others to step in.”

Why Now? Reasons Behind the Decision

1. Physical Fatigue

Maxwell’s body has taken a beating over the years. After suffering a major leg injury in 2022, he never quite felt the same. In recent interviews, he confessed to feeling physically restricted during long-format matches.

“I just didn’t feel like I could give my best in the field anymore,” Maxwell revealed.

2. Team Transition

The next ODI World Cup is in 2027. Maxwell felt it was fair to let younger players get accustomed to international cricket well in advance.

3. Focus on T20s

Maxwell isn’t done yet. He plans to continue in T20 Internationals and be a part of Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup in 2026. His aggressive style suits the shortest format, and he continues to be a game-changer.
